Step 1: Commit to the Grind, How to Earn Your 1 Cent Opportunities

Step 1: Commit to the Grind.

Every cent earned in your hard work piggy bank is a direct investment towards your future progress as an athlete. I believe that there are three key steps you need to focus on in order to recognize, cherish, and capture all of the 1 cent opportunities that you have before you. We will explore the 1st step today.
Step 1: Commit to the Grind.

“The Grind” is a defining area in sport where an athlete is pushed to go outside of their physical, mental, and emotional comfort zone. “The Grind” is the Mecca Zone to earning your “1 cent.”

Let’s say for example you have already had a hard and demanding practice and the coach says you now have to complete (10) timed 100-yard sprints under a certain time. Depending on your fitness level, all athletes will have a choice to make at some point along these (10) 100-yard sprints. Let’s say for this scenario, you are really fit and sprints 1-6 are completed with solid effort and are finished before the desired times. As you turn to gear up for rep 7 though, your feet feel like bricks, your quads are on fire, your lungs are heavy and desperate for more air. This physical response now forces your mind to make a decision for your body.

  • Option 1) Remain in your comfort zone – Ideas are going through your head such as – “This hurts. I’m tired. I’m going to fold back this rep and possibly finish over the time so that my lungs and legs have a chance to rest, then hopefully I’ll complete 8-9-10 under time to check it off the list.”
  • Option 2) Grind time. Your mind is saying “This is hard, but I can do this, I will accomplish this, I will finish this under the time. 1 foot in front of the other. Push harder. Let’s Go.”

Of course, when you choose option 2 – The whistle blows, you step outside of your physical mental emotional comfort zone to complete the reps under time.

Welcome to the Grind. The is where Champions are Found.

Keep in mind, completing sprints 1-6 set you up for the Grind Zone in this scenario as a fit athlete, but it is not where the one cent is earned. Earning your cent comes from the mentality you had to push yourself to work hard on rep 7, the choice you made not give up, and the determination you maintained to complete the reps and commit to the Grind.
